Chery
A5 ISG Sedan
The Chery A5 ISG is China's first home-grown, mass-produced
hybrid car. The Chery A5 ISG hybrid sedan uses an inline 4-cylinder
1.3-liter ACTECO engine combined with an integrated starter-generator
system.
Going against many expectations, Chery
has designed the A5 ISG as a full-hybrid instead of a
mild hybrid. The Chery A5 ISG also was designed with engine-idle
shutoff capabilities and regenerative braking to recharge
the battery. The standard Chery A5 is one of the most
popular cars in China, so Chery is betting that the A5
ISG hybrid will also do well.
This bet is in spite of the early unenthusiastic sales
reports for all hybrid vehicles currently being sold
in China. For instance, the Toyota
Prius is only selling about 100 cars a month.
But Toyota and General Motors is also betting that interest
will pick up as they both plan to escalate the number
of cars built for release in China.

Chery has also just announced the ending of the joint venture
with the sole U. S. distributor of Chery automobiles, Visionary
Vehicles LLC. Plans had been underway for Visionary Vehicles
LLC to launch the Chery A5 ISG hybrid car inside the U. S. in
2007, but now those plans have been scrapped because of the
ending of the joint venture.
