BMW X5 Hybrid SAV SUV

The BMW X5 Hybrid SUV (or SAV as they like to call it for Sport Activity Vehicle) has yet to find a roll out date, though the automaker has hinted that November 2007 will be when this date.

The most exciting feature of the gasoline-electric X5 Hybrid is that it sports high-performance super-capacitors under the boot floor that give more oomph than any other hybrid vehicle's battery pack currently on the market.

The BMW X5 Hybrid SAV shows off an increase in torque to 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft), outperforming any other BMW, while also increasing fuel efficiency by 15-percent from the standard X5 vehicle. The BMW X5 Hybrid concept vehicle uses an electric motor between the 4.4-litre V8 gasoline engine and transmission to give added electrical assistance as needed.

Because of the success of this design, BMW began developing a newer compact active transmission, which integrates the electric motor into the transmission. This design significantly reduces weight and space requirements for the system.

Automotive News Europe reports that BMW will show off its most recent iteration of the X5 Hybrid SAV at the IAA show in Frankfurt, Germany in September. BMW is expected to display the SUV's new advanced battery technology and high-performance capacitors, or "syncaps", which can store and release high amounts of power quickly.

The BMW X5 Hybrid SUV may just be the ticket for those who cringe at the thought of buying a gutless hybrid. With both increased performance and fuel efficiency the BMW X5 Hybrid SAV may be the selling point for savvy car enthusiasts.
