Motors Announces Plug-In Hybrid at the L. A. Auto Show
General Motors' CEO Rick Wagoner announced that GM is developing
a plug-in hybrid vehicle at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show
on Wednesday, November 29. The Saturn Green Line Vue vehicles
are to be the first recipients of the plug-in
hybrid technology.
The current plan is to introduce in 2009
the 2-mode Green Line with plug-in capabilities. The vehicle
will have the option of using the household 110v outlet
to top off the charge of the lithium-ion battery pack
and the vehicle will be capable of traveling 10 miles
in electric-only mode.
The major automakers have been reluctant to introduce
a plug-in hybrid to the marketplace since it would require
adding larger batteries and electric motors to the vehicles,
which in turn increases the weight and reduces space.
In addition, new technology will be needed in order
to deal with automotive lithium-ion batteries, which
are relatively new on the scene.

General Motors is taking the opportunity to develop first hybrids
and now plug-in hybrids largely to thwart its reputation as
a company that doesn't care about the environmental impact of
its vehicles. GM also sees an opportunity to announce its keen
interest in developing and marketing vehicles based upon the
latest in high technology.
